吟詩心情

#2019-0607

《吟詩心情》

壠上讀唐詩,
溪邊唱宋詞;
前朝皆過了,
我後亦如斯?

English translation: My Poetry-Singing Mood

On the hill, I enjoy reciting
        poems of Tang Dynasty* -- known as shi;
By a brook, I enjoy chanting
        the lyrics of Song Dynasty** -- called ci.

All the previous dynasties have passed by,
From now on, will people do the same as I?

------ By Mookoo Liang

Notes

   The Tang dynasty, called 唐朝 in Chinese, was an imperial dynasty of China spanning the 7th to 10th centuries. The Tang period was a golden age of Chinese literature and art. There are over 48,900 poems penned by some 2,200 Tang authors that have survived until modern times. Skill in the composition of poetry became a required study for those wishing to pass imperial examinations, while poetry was also heavily competitive; poetry contests among guests at banquets and courtiers were common. (See Wikipedia for Tang Poetry.)

**   The Song dynasty, called 宋朝 in Chinese, was an era of Chinese history that began in 960 and lasted until 1279. The Song dynasty is well-known for its literary genre called ci. Ci is a type of lyric poetry in the tradition of Classical Chinese poetry. Ci use a set of poetic meters derived from a base set of certain patterns, in fixed-rhythm, fixed-tone, and variable line-length format types, or model examples. The rhythmic and tonal pattern of the ci are based upon certain, definitive musical song tunes. Tjeu are also known as Changduanju (長短句, "lines of irregular lengths") and Shiyu (詩餘, "the poetry besides Shi"). (See Wikepedia for more information.)
