Raising the First Child According to Books (老大照書養)

#2011-0401

Seeing the books on the tea table, I'm sure that my son and his wife want to learn how to take better care of their son Little Bee. They do need some "practical guidelines" on parenting (or child raising).

It would be marvelously good if my wife and I could give them expert advice they need. The fact is that neither my wife nor I can even remember well enough how we took care of our son when he was a small baby. (In those years our parents gave us lots of help!)

Our son is the only child we have; we haven't obtained much experience of taking care of very little children. So, as you can see, it is necessary for all of us -- my son and his wife, my wife and I -- to refer to a good book, a specialist, or a doctor every now and then, to get whatever information needed. Well, for instance, I've just learned something new from one of the books on the tea table: A 5-month-old baby can practice doing what the photos (below) indicate -- Evidently, Little Bee loves to do such exercises with my help, for a few moments!

By the way, there is an interesting proverb in the Chinese language: "Lao da zhao shu yang; lao er zhao zhu yang!" This familiar saying means that you would raise your first child according to books, the ones teaching how to raise a child. But when raising the second child, you would take it very easy . . . literally, you would raise your second child in the same way as you raise pigs! I hope that when my son and his wife have their 2nd son (or 3rd, 4th, etc) my wife and I will be able to offer good help, just in the same way we love Little Bee.
