Ueno Zoological Garden (上野動物園)

#2023-0629B

東京之旅 Day 4: Grandpa & Grandma's Free Time
Regarding the Ueno Zoo, both the English and Chinese versions of Wikipedia provide some useful information for me to learn. (Check the links above, if you like.) Basically, the Zoo consists of two sections -- Eastern Garden (東園) and Western Garden (西園) -- which are connected by a bridge called the Aesop Bridge (伊索橋), built in 1961 and a monorail (namely, Ueno Zoo Monorail, or 上野懸垂線). Here are some important animals and birds being housed in these two Gardens (according to the English Wikipedia):

The eastern garden houses giant pandas (大熊貓), sika deer (梅花鹿), Japanese squirrels (日本松鼠), Eurasian otters (歐亞水獺), green pheasants (綠雉), snowy owls (雪鴞), Asian elephants (亞洲象), American bison (美洲野牛), black-tailed prairie dogs (黑尾土撥鼠), colobus monkeys (東黑白疣猴), black-handed spider monkeys (黑掌蜘蛛猴), Japanese macaques (日本獼猴), African sacred ibises (埃及聖鷺), Japanese black bears (日本黑熊), sun bears (馬來熊), Ussuri brown bears (東北棕熊), red-crowned cranes (丹頂鶴), South American tapirs (南美貘), Sumatran tigers (蘇門達臘虎), western lowland gorillas (西部低地大猩猩), polar bears (北極熊), California sea lions (加州海獅) and harbor seals (港海豹).

The western garden houses red pandas (喜瑪拉雅小熊貓), western grey kangaroos (西部灰袋鼠), African penguins (非洲企鵝 or 斑嘴環企鵝), Caribbean flamingos (美洲紅鸛), shoebills (鯨頭鸛), Barbary sheep (髯羊), hippopotamus (河馬), pygmy hippopotamus (倭河馬), black rhinoceros (黑犀牛), reticulated giraffes (網紋長頸鹿), okapis (霍加皮, 第一及第三字左側, 應加 "犬" 部首; also called 歐卡皮鹿), Aldabra giant tortoises (亞達伯拉象龜), saltwater crocodiles (灣鱷 or 鹹水鱷), green iguanas (綠鬣蜥), Japanese pond turtles (日本石龜), aye-ayes (指猴), ring-tailed lemurs (環尾狐猴), black-and-white ruffed lemurs (領狐猴), gray gentle lemurs (一種灰色的狐猴), cackling geese (小加拿大雁 or 小美洲黑雁), great white pelicans (白鵜鶘), Oriental storks (東方白鸛) and Steller's sea eagles (虎頭海鷗).

Study the above list, if you like. My questions are as follows:
  1. How many animals (and birds) have you seen before?
  2. What are your favorite animals (or birds)?
  3. And why do you like or dislike them?
