Yesterday morning, Jean and I left home for a two-day trip. We drove southward with no fixed plan for where we would spend the night. Eventually, we stopped at a roadside coffee-and-snacks shop. With the barista's help, we decided to book Sunshine (山下の厝) as our B&B for the night.
The roadside café where we took a short rest and enjoyed a simple lunch is called "耘穗" (Yun Sui). It is owned and operated by the Ruisui Township Farmers' Association. The staff were friendly and eager to help. To get a sense of the warm and welcoming atmosphere, please see the first five photos below.
The remaining photos show what Hongye Village (紅葉村) and our B&B, Sunshine (山下の厝), actually looked like. Hongye Village is part of Wanrong Township in Hualien County, while the B&B where we stayed is located in Ruisui Township at 花蓮縣瑞穗鄉瑞祥村溫泉路三段137號. Although they belong to different townships, the two places are geographically quite close.
Jean and I took a walk along a country road leading to Hongye Creek (紅葉溪). We were impressed by both the local buildings and the surrounding scenery. The elementary school, 紅葉國小; the Presbyterian church, 紅葉教會; the Roman Catholic church, 紅葉聖女德蘭堂; and the magnificent bridge spanning the well-known Hongye Creek all caught my attention in a way that is difficult to explain. Each seemed to possess a quiet yet unmistakable charm, inviting us to linger a little longer. (See the photos below.)
