Kevin and Elisa Are Engaged Today (文定之喜)

#2013-0601A

Congratulations, Kevin and Elisa!

Both of you have been engaged to each other, with so many of your relatives and your friends witnessing the very meaningful ceremony of engagement which was conducted this morning in accordance with our old traditions. We are so happy to have come to your engagement and we do hope that we'll be invited to your wedding very soon!

And I, who used to be a school teacher, would like to tell you something about LOVE during your Engagement Banquet at noon.

What is the meaning of love? The English word "love" consists of four letters and each of them carries a significant concept that both husband and wife should learn:

L = listen or listening -- Not only to "hear" what he/she says, but also "understand" what he/she means.

O = observe or observation -- To observe and learn what your husband's or wife's needs.

V = verbalize -- To communicate in the right words and, therefore, in an effective way. (The right type of "body language" can be helpful to the husband and wife's communication as well!)

E = equal or equality -- The husband is as important as the wife; neither is superior (or inferior) to the other. This is the basic principle for the husband and wife to follow.

Well, the love between husband and wife is not merely abstract ideas or concepts. Rather, it can be truly learned and it should be put into practice in your everyday life. So, Kevin and Elisa, just "observe" the fan that I've bought as a gift for you, and you'll see how closely related the three L's are. The three L's are Love, Living, and Learning in the noun forms. In my opinion, they are more likely to be verbs (words showing the actions): to LIVE, to LEARN, and to LOVE. -- See the first two pictures below.

參加「三姊 咱的愛」音樂會 (An Unforgettable Concert)

#2013-0525

Before the concert starts, Jean wants me to stand
on the stage so she can take a picture.
(Look! Am I ready to sing now?)

 (above) Jean and me in front of the stage;
(below) our friends, key members of "4 Degrees C".

The concert "Our Love, Sister #3" is going to start
at Evergreen Laurel Hotel Taichung!

(above and below) This is "San Jie" (Sister #3
-- our good teacher and good friend!

(above) Melody is a special guest who sings so very well!

Singing and Dancing -- the first item
presented by San Jie's students!

Singing "A Man without Love" tonight,
I am, in fact, a man with love. (Ha ha ha!)

Yuyuan, one of San Jie's students, is dancing gracefully.

(above and below.) Jiaqi (or spelled Chia Chi), also one of
San Jie's students, hosts this evening's concert.
She sings very well too.

Mr. Yumin Lin, a special guest, is playing the guitar and
singing the new song that he's just composed.

At the end of the program, San Jie is given flowers
by her son and her daughter and . . . .

All the performers this evening are photoed together with San Jie.

親情 (Family Love)

#2013-0514

"Family love (親情) is a traditional virtue in Chinese and other Asian cultures. It is basically the love within a family among the parents and children." This is the best definition of the Chinese phrase "親情" that I've ever found on the Internet.

If you asked me to translate 友情 (or 友誼) into English, I would say "friendship"; if you wanted to know what 手足之情 (or 兄弟情) means, I would use the English word "brotherhood" as an equivalent. However, just as some English words have no Chinese equivalents, I believe that it is impossible to find an English term that means exactly the same as qinqing (親情) -- Well, the English word kinship means the relationship between members of the same family. That is, kinship is 親屬關係. But kinship is not equal to 親情.

What, then, do we think of qinqing (親情) in Asian cultures? Maybe it can be simply translated as "family love" or, in its original literal sense, interpreted as "the affection or love between members of the same family." Anyway, we should be happy and proud that people in Taiwan [and those in other places] still treasure this unique form of "family love."
