Joy in Meeting Friends from Afar

有朋自遠方來，不亦樂乎？

How happy we are, 

To meet friends from afar!

This morning, around nine o’clock, I unexpectedly received a call from my former classmate Baixiang Shangguan. He said he was amazed to learn that I had been living in Hualien with my wife and our teenage grandchild.

"Where are you, Shangguan?" I asked.

"We stayed at Gihak last night," he replied, his voice full of excitement. "If it’s convenient, we’d love to come over and see you right away."

"Welcome! You’re more than welcome!" I was thrilled. "Are you coming with your wife, Zuhui? Can our classmate Fujun Lin and his wife, Meilan, also come along? I’ll be especially happy to see all of you today!"

I then heard soft background voices discussing the plan. Wonderful! How joyful it was that all of us—Baixiang Shangguan and his wife, Zuhui; Fujun Lin and his wife, Meilan; my wife and I; and another couple who had come with Shangguan and Zuhui from Taipei—were able to meet at The General’s Residence (將軍府). After visiting that historic site, we continued on to The Pine Garden (松園別館) and finally to Sea Sky Coffee (海中天). This Friday will be remembered as one of the happiest days we have shared together.
