My viola had been resting in its case for several weeks. Why hadn’t I let it breathe some fresh air? I asked myself this question this morning.
So, I took it out and played. Or perhaps it’s more accurate to say I played with it, rather than simply “played it,” for a couple of hours—an hour in the morning and a little more than an hour in the afternoon.
Ah, as a Taiwanese proverb says, “Sann ji̍t bô liū, peh-tsiūnn tshiū.” (三日無餾,𬦰上樹。) In other words, after just three days without practice, your fingers feel as if they’re climbing a tree. Some of the Mozart pieces I had learned already seemed a little unfamiliar. I suppose I’ll need to practice my instrument more regularly from now on.
