Since yesterday morning, I’ve been repeatedly listening to this old melody on YouTube — at least a dozen times. I even tried playing it on my viola, because that nostalgic tune deeply touched the innermost part of my heart.
What is it, then?
Well, here are my bilingual notes on Serenade Op. 6 by Enrico Toselli (1883-1926), along with my handwritten copy of the Chinese lyrics.
In addition, I’d like to share another song, Moon on the Colorado (科羅拉多之月), which I copied by hand so that I could remember those days when I was studying at Chiayi Teachers’ Junior College. (See photos below.)

The Composer: 作曲家
- Enrico Toselli (1883–1926) was an Italian pianist and composer.
- He’s remembered today almost entirely for one work: his Serenade, Op. 6, No. 1, sometimes called “Serenata Rimpianto” (Serenade of Remembrance or of Regret).
The Piece: 作品
- Composed around 1900–1901 when Toselli was in his late teens.
- The title “Serenata” in Italian means serenade, but Toselli subtitled it rimpianto, which means regret, longing, or wistful remembrance.
- Musically, it’s a short, lyrical, romantic piece, with a gentle, almost nostalgic melody.
- It became widely popular in the early 20th century and was arranged for many instruments — piano, violin, voice, and full orchestra.
Popular Reception: 大眾迴響
- Although Toselli wrote other works (songs, operettas, piano pieces), none matched the popularity of this Serenade.
- It was sung by famous singers like Enrico Caruso (恩里科·卡魯索) and later recorded countless times by others.
- The bittersweet mood of the piece made it especially beloved in Europe and beyond.
Toselli’s Life, Adding Depth to the Music: 托塞利的一生 ~ 為音樂增添深度
- Toselli’s personal life was dramatic: in 1907 he married Archduchess Louise of Austria (奧地利-托斯卡納的路易絲), a scandalous match since she had left her royal husband.
- Their marriage was troubled and ended in separation. Toselli died young, only 43, of tuberculosis.
- Because of this history, many people later associated his Serenade with lost love and nostalgia, though he actually wrote it before those events.

So when you listen to “Serenade Op. 6,” you’ll hear:
- A flowing, graceful melody, almost like a heartfelt song without words.
- A sense of sweetness mixed with sorrow, fitting its subtitle “rimpianto.”

🎵 A Listener’s Guide to Toselli’s Serenade 🎶
1. The Opening Theme
- The piece begins with a gentle, singing melody.
- It feels almost like someone speaking softly or reminiscing.
- Notice how the line rises tenderly, then falls back down, like a sigh — this is where the “regret/nostalgia” character shines.
2. The Emotional Flow
- The music doesn’t rush. It has a calm, swaying rhythm, as if walking slowly under evening lights.
- Listen for the shifts between major and minor harmonies — they create that bittersweet balance between warmth (fond memory) and sorrow (regret).
3. Middle Section
- The melody broadens a little, becoming slightly more passionate.
- Some performers add more dynamic contrast here — you may hear the music “lean” forward, as though remembering something intensely, before calming down again.
4. The Return
- The opening melody returns, softer and more resigned.
- It feels like the music is circling back to its first thought, but with a deeper sense of acceptance.
5. The Ending
- The piece doesn’t end with drama but rather with a gentle fading away, like a memory dissolving into the night.
