It will be the Mid-Autumn Festival — also known as the Moon Festival — tomorrow. Tonight, after taking a walk along Meilun Creek with Jean and James, I’d like to share what I’ve been practicing these past few days:
Yuèguāng Xiǎoyèqŭ (“The Moonlight Serenade”)
With my viola on my shoulder, I can now play this old song — a Mandarin version derived from the Japanese song (Sayon no Kane / Sayon’s Bell) — as well as two other pieces I’ve practiced recently:
- Serenade Op. 6 by Enrico Toselli (1883–1926)
- Hamabe no Uta (Song of the Seashore) by Tamezō Narita (1893–1945)
Below are the lyrics from both the Mandarin and Japanese versions of this short but well-loved song — for your appreciation. Enjoy reading or singing them.

The moon drifts before my window, / Casting beams of tender love. / I bow my head in quiet thought, / Yet cannot read your heart...
Like tonight’s moon above, / At times dim, at times bright again — / Ah... is it love or restless longing? / Ah... moonlight.
The moonlit night feels just like a dream — / How could I forget that sweet dream? / Soft whispers still linger by my ears; / How can I not recall them?
I fear to see that moonlit glow; / I lift my gaze and draw the curtain. / Ah... my heart is drunk, my heart uneasy — / Ah... moonlight.

Storms rage at the mountain’s foot; / The rushing stream shakes the frail log bridge. / Who crosses there — a lovely maiden, / With crimson lips — ah, Sayon.
He departs for a glorious battle — / My brave and noble teacher, dear to me. / Bearing his load, he hums a cheerful song; / The rain keeps falling — ah, Sayon.
Lost in the storm, a single flower falls, / Vanishing into the sorrowful mist. / Though birds cry out in the village grove, / Why do you not return, ah, Sayon?
Who would not remember / The pure heart of that maiden with tears? / In the deep twilight of the southern isle, / The bell keeps tolling — ah, Sayon.
