Crawling and Climbing!

#2011-1023

Crawling and climbing! My little grandson keeps crawling around, and climbing up and down!

There's a Chinese proverb: "The water goes downward; the human, upward!" How true it is! My grandson Little Bee, who was just given a new and sensible nickname "Human-form Insect," very much enjoys crawling and climbing -- not only on the level and smooth floor but also up to a higher place or position! He's now especially interested in climbing up a sofa, and then up the arms of the sofa. In the living room of our apartment, one of the sofas (the longest piece of the set) is pushed against a wall with a window from where Little Bee can see the outside world if he stands on the long arm (or low back) of the sofa. He loves to stand high there and watch outside, with his little hands holding the window frame or the drapes. Obviously this is something risky for a one-year-old boy to do, but as I can see, he doesn't care about the possible danger at all. He would like to climb up something again and again. And he would climb as high up as he can. (No wonder my son called my grandson ren-xing-chong, Insect in the Human Form.)

This afternoon we took Little Bee to the Zhans -- By the way, my close friend Mr. Zhan is my former classmate; and his wife Mrs. Zhan, my wife's former classmate, is now one of our best friends! Both of them were very pleased to see our "little prince" (also "insect in the human form") crawl on their smooth wooden floor, and then climb upward along the beautiful wooden staircase that leads to the second floor! . . . Well, Human-form Insect climbing the stairs! That was really a funny performance, which would probably make you laugh too!

(Seven Fairies)

#2011-1021

Spring

Paragraphs 1 and 2

As [people] previously expected, (the) spring has come as the east winds have been blowing! 動詞「盼望」可視情況譯成 to expect, to hope for, to long for, to look forward to, to wish for, to yawn for 等等,但原作者重複地說:「盼望著,盼望著 . . .

〔英譯〕 Oh, the waiting, the waiting! Finally the east winds begin to blow and spring is just around the corner. The world seems to have awakened from its slumber as, excitedly, it opens its eyes. [Rearranged 2nd paragraph in translation] The mountains take on a luster, the waters start to rise, and there is a blush on the face of the sun.

Paragraph 3

Some people . . . some are . . . and others are . . . See you again.) The breezes are gentle; the grass, soft as cotton.

〔英譯〕 In the gardens and in the countryside new grass, tender and green, secretly threads its way up through the earth; everywhere you look the ground is covered with it. Some people are seated, some are lying down, and others are turning somersaults; then there are games of ball, foot races, and hide-and-seek. The breezes are gentle; the grass, soft as cotton.

Paragraph 4

〔英譯〕 Peach trees, apricot trees, and pear trees jostle each other, all of them in magnificent bloom, each trying to outdo the other. There are fiery reds, pinks like the sunset, and snowy whites -- and always the abounding fragrance of flowers. Close your eyes, and the trees seem already heavily laden with peaches and apricots and pears. Beneath the flowers a teeming host of bees fills the air with the sound of their buzzing, as butterflies, large and small, flit to and fro. Everywhere there are wild flowers of many kinds, those with names and those without, scattered throughout the thickets and looking like countless eyes or like stars, here and there winking at you.

Paragraph 5

. .」譯作 Oh, how true! . . . .

〔英譯〕 "When the willows are green, the winds that touch your face carry no chill." Oh, how true! They are like the caress of your mother's hand. And the winds bring an aroma of freshly turned earth mixed with the scent of new grass and the bouquet of a myriad flowers, all blended together in the slightly moistened air. Birds make their nests among the luxuriant flowers and tender leaves, and in delight they blend their voices; from their throsts come the crisp, boastful strains of their songs of enchantment, which merge with the sounds of gentle breezes and flowing water. Then you can also hear a lilting tune from a shepherd boy's flute, played the day long as he sits astride his bullock.

Just look -- it is like the fine hair of a bullock, like delicate embroidery needles, or fine silk . . . . 確有主詞 it (代表 the rain) 存在。此外,雨「密密地斜織著,人家屋頂上全籠著一層薄煙,」譯成 densely slanting downward as woven strands, covering the roofs of houses with a blanket of fine mist. The leaves of the trees are so green they sparkle, and the grass is so green it hurts your eyes. 本段當中,有燈光「烘托出」譯作 (that) accentuates,農夫「披著簑,戴著笠的」譯成 clad in their grass cloaks and hats,而「草屋」直譯為 grass hut,這些是全篇譯文中 Mookoo Liang 個人覺得比較「拙」(不夠完美/不夠傳神)的幾處。

〔英譯〕 Most prevalent are the rains; a single rainfall can last two or three days. But don't be distressed! Just look -- it is like the fine hair of a bullock, like delicate embroidery needles, or fine silk, densely slanting downward as woven strands, covering the roofs of houses with a blanket of fine mist. The leaves of the trees are so green they sparkle, and the grass is so green it hurts your eyes. Toward evening the lamps are lit, giving off a pale yellow glow that accentuates a night of tranquility and peace. Off in the countryside, on the small paths and at the sides of stone bridges, people stroll  leisurely under their raised umbrellas. Then there are the farmers who work the soil clad in their grass cloaks and hats, and whose grass huts are scattered around the countryside, standing silently in the rain.

Paragraph 7

〔英譯〕 In the sky the number of kites slowly increases as the number of children on the ground grow. In the city and in the countryside the populace seems to come to life; the old and the young emerge in spirited animation, flexing their muscles and stirring up their spirits, each occupying himself in his own pursuits. Spring is the time when plans for the year ahead must be made; when starting out, there is an abundance of time, and everywhere there is hope.

Paragraphs 8, 9, and 10

Spring is like a blossoming and graceful maiden, laughing and walking on.

〔英譯〕 Spring is like a newborn child, brand new from head to toe, starting out in life. [Paragraph 9] Spring is like a blossoming and graceful maiden, laughing and then walking on. [Paragraph 10] Spring is like a robust youth with limbs of iron, leading us on the road ahead.

Little Bee

#2011-1015

Born on the 18th day of October, 2010, Little Bee will be one year old very soon. He will, as usual, go with his mommy to visit her parents (i.e. Little Bee's wai-gong and wai-po) on Sunday evening or Monday morning, so we would like to celebrate his birthday ahead of time, during this weekend.

Now his mommy and daddy had brought home a birthday cake -- so small but so cute, all of us including my wife (Little Bee's a-ma) were ready for the celebration. We put the cake on the tea table, we lit the number-one candle and made it stand on top of the cake, and we started to sing Happy Birthday to You to our birthday boy, in a happy voice!

Ah! What an amusing scene! The cake is, as previously planned, prepared for our little boy, but in reality he is too small to eat anything sweet or salty! Will he not feel very confused about our sharing this delicate cake but he is not allowed to have any of it? When we happily sing the Happy Birthday song to him, he is just so much scared of the candlelight -- the flickering bright flame at the top of the candle, which he has seen for the very first time in his life! . . . .

To our surprise, he burst out crying, and only when I held him in my arms and his daddy made faces to tease him, could he smile his tears away!

我的回信提到:我完全能夠想像及體會,成「公」的喜樂滋味!(Thanks and praises be to God!) . . I have also enjoyed being a grandfather, my Little Bee (小蜜蜂 born on Oct. 18, last year) being almost one year old now! May I share some pictures of him with you? Just click: (1) . . . and/or (2) . . . . May the Lord always bless you and me, happy and excited grandfathers!

How do you write 4 in between 5?

於是我問道:Why does four plus five equel nine?

(The Wedding of Yi-Te and Yu-Ting)

#2011-1008
