A few days ago, my second grandson, Shine, told his grandma over the phone that he had started "group practice" in his school’s string band and that he was the only one without his own instrument.
"Now that Shine is continuing in the music class, and since everyone else has their own instrument, shouldn’t we get him a viola [his major] too?" Jean said to me.
She added, "Shine is such a sweet boy. When he called to tell me about his progress in music, he even referred to himself as our băobèi [= darling, baby, a treasured one]."
I completely agreed to buy Shine a new viola. For the past year, Shine had been using a secondhand viola that his school, Mingyi Elementary, lent him. (Note: The photos show Shine's own viola, his first string instrument.)
