Yesterday, Jean and I invited our second grandson, Shine, to join us for a walk. We eventually made our way to the Taiwan Provincial Consultative Council Memorial Park, where, to our delight, we ran into the beautiful roosters I had first spotted back in late July.
Shine was thrilled to see such colorful birds. Picking a small handful of grass, he crouched down and held it out, tempting them as if it were actual chicken feed. One inquisitive rooster fell for the trick, but when it pecked the grass straight from his hand, its sharp beak gave his palm a painful pinch. Though a bit startled, Shine was undeterred and spent quite some time trying to entice the birds with his makeshift feed.
Before long, his attention shifted to a few white ducks nearby. He crept in so close that they ended up fluttering into Sun Moon Pond, paddling away as if fleeing a duck hunter!
We spent a wonderful afternoon in the park, and I managed to capture several photos of Shine enjoying his time with the birds—precious snapshots that I know we’ll treasure for years to come.
However, an unexpected surprise was waiting for us the very next afternoon.
When we returned to the park around 5:30 p.m. the next day, we spotted two of the handsome roosters perched high on a tree branch several meters above the ground. Their roost was just beyond the park fence, tucked beneath a canopy of lush, leafy trees. Even though the morning had long passed and the sky was darkening after a midday rain, the duo suddenly burst into song, crowing together in harmony like a well-rehearsed duet. I managed to capture a video of their loud performance (click below to watch).
It was such a special experience for Shine to stand just a few feet away and watch those roosters crowing together high in the trees.
