"Chìjiăo Jīnglíng" (赤腳精靈) -- Barefoot elves? Or elves with red feet?
Jean and I as well as my 1st and 2nd sisters went to the restaurant Chìjiăo Jīnglíng for lunch today. We had a wonder time walking around that place after lunch.
According to the legend, once upon a time a group of jīnglíng (meaning "elves" or something like that) came to the Monkeys' Well (猴探井) on the Bagua Plateau (八卦山脈). Those adorable elves came to grow pumpkins, sweet potatoes, pineapples, etc., in this region. They worked very hard with their bare feet on the reddish soil (formally called 紅土, "laterite") on the high, flat part of the mountain range . . .
They were called "Chìjiăo Jīnglíng" for two reasons, I think. Reason 1: In Chinese 赤腳 (chìjiăo) means "barefoot." Reason 2: The two Chinese characters 赤 腳 (chì jiăo) literally mean "red foot/feet." If you work (or play) barefoot in the fields of red soil for hours, your feet will be soiled by the red soil, won't they?
