Tianpu Ecological Pond
(田埔生態池)
Tianpu Ecological Pond is a small wetland in downtown Hualien, only about two hectares in size. It sits across from the Forest Administration Office and Guofeng Junior High School, and you can reach it easily from the nearby Far Eastern Department Store. For a place so close to busy streets, it feels surprisingly calm and green.
Many years ago, the pond was used to store logs cut from the nearby forests. But as Taiwan slowly stopped large-scale logging, the pond no longer served its old purpose and was left quiet for a while.
In 2005, Hualien Agricultural High School helped give the place a new life. They turned the old log pond into a wetland park. The change was simple but meaningful: students now had a real outdoor classroom, and people in Hualien gained a pleasant green space to enjoy.
Today, beside the lotus flowers and other water plants in the pond, the park is filled with many kinds of shrubs and trees. Students from the high school still take care of the plants and help keep the park in good shape. In the center lies a wide lawn—soft, bright, and almost always touched by the breeze. Families spread out picnic mats, children run around, and sometimes small concerts or community events take place on the grass.
Around the pond, signs tell visitors about the plants, birds, and wetland wildlife that live there. The old log-measuring house has been cleaned up and turned into a small display room that shares the history of logging in Hualien. A few pieces of old forestry equipment remain near the water’s edge, like quiet reminders of the past. Together, they make the park not only a peaceful place to rest, but also one where nature and history meet in a gentle way.
