Every time I walk past the Hualien Post Office on Zhongshan Road, my eyes are drawn to the four large pictures displayed on its front wall. They depict scenes from traditional postal life—three photographs of mail delivery and one of postage stamps featuring story-like illustrations. In one image, a postman in a green uniform hands a letter to a villager standing outside a modest rural home.
These scenes always stir a deep sense of nostalgia in me. When I see them, I am reminded of how things were in earlier years. Back then, I wrote letters by hand—not on a typewriter or a computer—and had to wait weeks or even months for replies before I could write again. After submitting pieces to magazines or to the literary supplements of newspapers, I waited patiently to know whether my work was accepted or rejected. Everything took time, yet the slowness felt meaningful.
Today, modern technology has replaced many tasks once done patiently and by hand. Letter writing and postal communication have largely been overtaken by faster and more efficient systems. Still, I often find myself indulging in the nostalgia tucked away in memory. Those years were, to me, the Good Old Days.
It is enjoyable—and sometimes inspiring—to be reminded of them through images like these.
