Street Art in a Quiet Week

#2026-0107

In Hualien City, there is a street called Shangxiao Jie (商校街), stretching from Jinfeng Jie (進豐街) in the east to Zhongshan Lu (中山路) in the west. It runs in two levels—an upper road for cars and walkers, and a lower path favored by pedestrians, bicycles, and small motorcycles.

Yesterday morning I took the lower path. The walls along it are covered with drawings and paintings that have long surrendered to weather and time. The sun has bleached them; rain has washed away their outlines; the wind has peeled off their colors. What remains is a kind of rusty beauty—tired, yet expressive.

I was on my way to Hua Yu cafeteria, where I have been eating since Jean returned to Taichung on Tuesday, the same day James began his four-day graduation trip with his Grade 9 schoolmates. Jean will come back after James. Until he returns, I will be living alone in Hualien City. I will not cook; instead, I will eat out and enjoy whatever street-corner scenes the days happen to offer.
